Biography For Julio Gonzalez
Julio Gonzalez was born in 1876 in Barcelona, Spain. As a young man he
worked in his family's metallurgy workshop, which carried out commissions
for the Sacred Family of Gaudi. He was involved with the Catalan modernist
circle Els Quatre Gats, then the most restless of the Barcelona art
groups, where he met Pablo Picasso. In 1900 he settled in Paris,
abandoning his native country for good. In 1918, he began investigating
the artistic possibilities of welding, which would become his principal
contribution to sculpture. During the 1930's, he purified the abstract
elements of his works, but also began working in a figurative style. He
died in Arceuil, France, in 1942.
